Gabriela Vargas the second College of Education student since 2015 to receive prestigious award

Curriculum & Instruction graduate student Gabriela Vargas has been selected as a recipient of the highly competitive Community for Advancing Discovery Research in Education (CADRE) Fellowship.

As a project manager of the National Science Foundation-funded study “CAREER: Noticing and Using Students’ Prior Knowledge in Problem-Based Instruction,” Vargas has been conducting research and was a co-author on the “Using Technology to Support Teachers’ Lesson Adaptations during Lesson Study” article, published by the Journal of Technology and Teacher Education.

The study, now in its fifth year, is being led by Associate Professor Gloriana González, who is developing and studying a professional-development framework designed to help high school geometry teachers more carefully notice and attend to prior knowledge of their students and adjust teaching practices accordingly. The project also integrates lesson study, animation discussions, and video clubs, González said.

Vargas joins Lisa Skultety as the second College of Education student to receive the CADRE Fellowship within the last two years.
